Eero and some other routers will cause Source-Connect to crash when ports are not forwarded

Version 3.1 - 3.9.1, Windows and macOS

Due to a new UPnP bug, Source-Connect version 3 will crash with some newer routers such as Eero if UPnP is enabled and ports are not correctly forwarded.

Solution

  • Disable UPnP in the Router either using the APP on your phone or through website login to the router.
  • Give your computer a DHCP reservation in the router and port forward for source-connect in the router

The Source-Connect crashing on login issue seems to be related to the UPnP function in eero routers being broken after a recent update. UPnP is an automated port mapping protocol. To fix the issue, you will need to disable UPnP in the eero router settings, and then also manually setup port forwarding. See instructions below.  

Disabling UPnP  
1. Open the eero app on your smart phone  
2. Go to the settings tab  
3. Select Network Settings  
4. Select Advanced settings  
5. Select UPnP and then disable it  

Setting up Port Forwarding  
1. Open the eero app on your smart phone  
2. Go to the settings tab  
3. Select Network Settings  
4. Select Advanced settings  
5. Select Reservations & Port Forwarding  
6. Select Add a reservation  
7. Select your computer from the list  
8. Select Open a port and save the reservation  
9. Enter the following info:  

Port name: Source-Connect  
External port: 6000  
Internal port: 6000  
Protocol: UDP  

10. Save and then go back and add another port rule this time for port 6001.  

This should help get Source-Connect running. You could also try bypassing the eero router entirely if that is an option.

Install the latest version of Source-Connect Standard or Source-Connect Pro (if you are using that).
