Apple is phasing out Rosetta: What this means for audio software
Since the release of Apple Silicon hardware, Rosetta 2 has been critical to allow the use of software built for older Intel machines on the newer M1, M2, M3 and now M4 machines.
Apple has confirmed that macOS 28, which is scheduled for release in 2027, will officially remove support for software that requires Rosetta.
For the global community of voice talent, studios, and engineers, this isn't just a software update - it is a hard deadline. To maintain compatibility when using collaboration tools it’s critical that—together—we transition to the current minimum supported software versions.
What this means for our software
At Source Elements, we have always prioritized stability. Many of our long-term users use Source-Connect 3.9 for their daily sessions, as it has been the flagship of remote recording for a generation.
Because Source-Connect 3.9 was built for the Intel architecture, it currently requires Rosetta to function on modern M-series Macs. Once macOS 28 arrives, Source-Connect 3.x will no longer be able to launch on those machines.
The Path Forward: Source-Connect 4
The good news is that Source-Connect 4 was engineered from the ground up to be Apple Silicon Native.
- Modernized architect: SC4 runs directly on the M1, M2, M3, and future M4/M5 chips.
- Future-Proofed: It is fully compatible with the upcoming macOS 27.
- Performance: By running natively, you get better CPU efficiency, lower latency, and the rock-solid stability required for high-stakes remote sessions.
- Never-seen features: Since the release of Source-Connect 4 we’ve been releasing new and improved features such as Restore & Replace, Resilience or Dolby Atmos streaming which makes it the most sophisticated software for the remote recording industry.
The Path Forward: Source-Nexus Suite 1.4 onwards
For our Source-Nexus legacy license holders with previous versions of Source-Nexus 1.4 will be incompatible as well. This means that your Source-Nexus I/O plugin will stop routing audio, but we’ve got better news for you too.
Set up and test early
While macOS 27 (releasing later this year) will still support Rosetta, it will also be the final version to do so. We are encouraging everyone to begin the transition to Source-Connect 4 and Source-Nexus Suite as soon as possible.
Upgrading today ensures that when your Mac eventually prompts you for that macOS 28 update, your studio stays online, your sessions stay connected, and your workflow remains uninterrupted. And it ensures that you can continue to seamlessly connect to the studios and talent you work with, as their systems also upgrade.

Compatibility Check
Is my studio ready?
- Launch your Source-Connect or Source-Nexus application.
- Open Activity Monitor on your Mac.
- Under the Architecture column, if it says "Intel", that software will stop working in 2027.
- If it says "Apple", you are ready for macOS 28.
