Network Configuration and Bandwidth for Source-Connect 4
A stable, reliable Internet connection is essential for a successful Source-Connect session. Bandwidth alone does not describe connection quality. Stability means that data can travel consistently, without large changes in delay (jitter), congestion, or packet loss. These factors can affect audio even when a speed test reports plenty of bandwidth.
As a practical guideline, allow at least 10 Mbps upload and download per active Internet user on your connection. This provides useful headroom for Source-Connect and everyday network activity, but a stable connection remains just as important as its speed.
How to improve connection stability
- Use wired Ethernet whenever possible. A direct Ethernet connection is generally more stable than Wi-Fi and avoids wireless interference.
- If you use Wi-Fi, stay close to the access point. Keep a clear path to the router, use a strong signal, and avoid moving around during the session.
- Reduce competing network activity. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, software updates, streaming, and other video calls on the same network while recording.
- Choose a reliable fixed connection. Fibre or business-grade cable service will generally provide more consistent results than a shared or weak wireless connection.
- Test from the recording location. The connection where you will record matters more than a test made elsewhere on the same account or service.
You may need to configure your firewall and/or router if you are inside a corporate network or have an active firewall. Corporate firewalls and routers may be able to provide QoS services to increase your application bandwidth. Please contact our support personnel if you have difficulty connecting successfully, we have dedicated tools and services to support all corporate and enterprise use cases.
How to measure your connection
Before a recording session, test your connection with Speedtest to check available bandwidth and ping. Run the test several times, including at the time of day you plan to record. Consistent results are more useful than one high result: large swings in speed or ping can indicate congestion or an unstable connection. If your test service reports jitter or packet loss, lower and more consistent values are preferable.
A test server in California, for example, does not guarantee the same performance when connecting to a peer in Australia. For the most meaningful check, arrange a short Source-Connect test with your remote participant before the session.
Source-Connect 4 does not require port forwarding - therefore, as long as the internet connection is consistent, you will not have any issues connecting with Source-Connect 4 on a Starlink connection.
